Open Letter to supermarkets on the availability of Freefrom and alternative foods

The Anaphylaxis Campaign, the only UK wide charity operating solely for the growing numbers of people at risk from severe allergic reactions and anaphylaxis, has heard increasing concerns from the allergic community about the availability of FreeFrom and alternative foods during the coronavirus pandemic.

The lack of supplies of basic staple foods appears to have led to people buying alternative products from the ‘FreeFrom’ section of the supermarket instead. This means that those foods are then not available for the people who would normally buy them, including individuals with severe allergies who have no choice and cannot buy substitutes.

We take these concerns extremely seriously and have been working hard to formulate an action plan to bring these issues to the attention of the food industry and the appropriate regulatory bodies. As part of this plan we have joined forces with Allergy UK and BSACI to send a joint letter to all of the major supermarkets asking for their help to intervene and resolve this issue. This is an open letter which you can read here.
