About us
The European Space Agency (ESA) is Europe’s gateway to space. Its mission is to shape the development of Europe’s space capability and ensure that investment in space continues to deliver benefits to the citizens of Europe and the world. ESA is an international organisation with 22 Member States. By coordinating the financial and intellectual resources of its members, it can undertake programmes and activities far beyond the scope of any single European country. ESA's 22 Member States are Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Slovenia, Slovakia, Latvia and Lithuania are Associate Members. Canada takes part in some projects under a cooperation agreement. Five other EU states have Cooperation Agreements with ESA: Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus and Malta.

⏰One step closer to... a #CubeSat swarm mission! The next revolution in space technology could be using swarms of small spacecraft working together rather than one much bigger spacecraft. 🛰️ ESA's Discovery Programme put out a call for ideas for CubeSat swarms, then assessed submissions in its Concurrent Design Facility. 💡 Check the winning mission concepts here 👉https://lnkd.in/eh7Dz3XJ ESA Technology

European Space Agency - ESA reposted this
I was extremely moved and felt deeply honoured to have accepted the Geospatial World Hall of Fame Award last night. This recognition is not just a personal accolade but a testament to the remarkable collective journey we — me yes, but also ESA, Europe, and countless Europeans — have undertaken together. Not to mention all the sacrifices our families have made as we all continue to tirelessly reach for the stars. When I reflect on the past few years, it is evident that the European Earth observation field has been on a transformative path — one that has emphasised innovation, collaboration, and the real-world application of space technologies. We have worked diligently to push the boundaries of what is possible in EO, leveraging these advancements to tackle global challenges such as climate resilience, sustainable development, and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) imperatives. We have fostered an environment that encourages commercial engagement and participation, bridging the gap between academia, industry, and government, spurring technological breakthroughs, and ushering in a new era of accessibility and utility for geospatial data and services in the fields of Earth observation, Earth and climate science, Global Positioning, Navigation and Timing, and Telecommunications. This award signifies that our efforts have not gone unnoticed, and I must credit the incredible teams at ESA, in industry, as well as our partners across the globe for their dedication and passion. Together, we have shifted the functional culture of the space and geospatial community, democratising access to Earth observation data and location-based services. Looking to the future, and in order to continue this legacy, we must recognise the critical importance of space resilience. Space infrastructure is no longer a luxury but a cornerstone of modern governance, security, and citizen services. Agenda 2025 is ensuring that these services remain reliable and indispensable in the face of evolving challenges and that we continue to develop the next generations of systems to bring new benefits to society and the economy. More on Agenda 2025 👉 https://lnkd.in/eGTjJiXA Thank you once again to the Geospatial World for this incredible honour. Let us continue pushing boundaries, inspiring the next generation, and harnessing the potential of space for the betterment of all. Full list of awardees 👉 https://lnkd.in/e_Vr4jCG
We are honoured to induct Ola Rollén and Josef Aschbacher into the Geospatial World Hall of Fame at the Geospatial World Forum 2024 in Rotterdam. Dr. Aschbacher is known for his stellar leadership at the European Space Agency - ESA, and his invaluable contribution in making the agency agile, dynamic, innovative, and at the forefront of cutting-edge research, sustainability drive, and social purpose. He has been a guiding light at the helm of ESA. His exemplary leadership style is people's first – listening to problems, identifying fault-lines, spotting anomalies, and then charting out a concrete strategy and road-map With a marvelous string of over 200 mergers and acquisitions, Ola diversified Hexagon AB's focus area, reoriented core competencies, divested obsolete businesses, and cemented its name. He took the reins of a diverse conglomerate with stakes across multiple sectors and turned into a nimble tech firm that offers state-of-the-art sensors, positioning, and autonomous systems. Heartiest congratulations to both the inspirational leaders.

Did you see last weekend’s #SolarStorm light up the sky? ☀️ Well, the ESA/NASA #SOHO spacecraft saw it first... and it looks like a...blizzard? ❄️🤔 Stationed 1.5 million kilometres away from Earth, SOHO constantly watches the Sun, returning spectacular pictures and data of the storms that rage across its surface.
