Stepping up to the ‘Ventilator Challenge’

How OxVent came about

Born out of the 2020 Coronavirus pandemic and the UK Government’s ‘Ventilator Challenge’, the award-winning OxVent was designed by an expert team of engineers and medics from The University of Oxford and King’s College London.

The OxVent team was one of only 15 organisations selected from over 5,000 offers of support generated by the Challenge. For OxVent, the Ventilator Challenge meant partnering with global MedTech company Smith+Nephew to turn a prototype electro-mechanical ventilator into a safe, reliable medical device, ready for production.

Following this success, OxVent Ltd (the company) was established as a social venture to deploy the OxVent ventilator during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.

OxVent’s Mission & Vision

OxVent’s humanitarian mission is to help build sustainable, resilient medical device manufacturing and supply in LMICs (Low-to-Middle Income Countries). We will do this by partnering with manufacturers and distributors, in-country, and offering wrap-around support for the assembly, regulatory approval and monitoring of low-cost, reliable, medical ventilators.

Increasing the availability of ventilators will help treat more COVID-19 patients and extend access to breathing machines for under-served, routine conditions requiring ventilatory assistance. These are usually the result of non-infectious diseases:  a C-section, heart attack or road traffic accident victim, for example.

Collaborate with us

Our approach delivers practical (in-country) expertise in building, supporting and repairing specifically designed and adapted life-support medical devices in low to middle income countries.  We aim to do this responsibly and sustainably, increasing the resilience of healthcare systems to clinical challenges, including pandemics.

While the OxVent is in the process of being qualified for clinical use, we actively seek collaboration with groups able to help manufacture, supply or support the product in LMICs.

OxVent Ltd will also make its ventilators available in higher income countries, underlining that this equipment has been designed, tested and manufactured to world class standards.
