Overview

The purpose of the BA Content, Media & Film Production course is to inspire the next generation of creative screen entrepreneurs, equipping them with the knowledge, critical thinking skills, professional skills, and the attitude to deliver a range of filmed projects to their intended audiences.

This course challenges you to create branded content, viral videos, fictional tv series, and social impact filmmaking, as well as skills to navigate the modern media environment through digital literacy and data, social media analytics, and creative entrepreneurship.

This course is offered through our partnership with the University of West London. International students who require a visa to study in the UK are not eligible to study on this course.

Why Take the Course?

  • Practical: Students will benefit from a module system where they acquire knowledge and understanding about the evolving media landscape, learn about storytelling, analytics, audience media consumption, and contemporary trends in delivering video content.
  • Industry-facing: Learn digital video production skills from professionals who are active in the media industries, ensuring that the skills learned will be relevant and up to date*.
  • Real-life Experience: Each semester, an industry partner from a creative field will set a brief, and students will produce content for them as part of their assessment. Our previous partners include Twitter, Karmarama, VidCon, and MTV. At the end of each semester, the partners will help to judge the productions of students, and award prizes to the winning entries.
  • Portfolio: Coupled with practical experience, students will emerge from their degree with a portfolio of professional content, and a business plan to help them navigate the complex media and creative industries job market.

Programme Aims

Empower students to produce dynamic screen content through industry-relevant coursework that entertains, informs, explores, educates, and challenges audiences across a range of media platforms.
Facilitate the application of key techniques and creative approaches, cultivating a critical understanding of the relationship between the concepts, conventions, and theories that support/underpin students’ practical work.
Teach a wide range of creative, technical, and editorial skills associated with all aspects of screen production, including film, TV, online/social media, advertising/branding, and gaming/VR.
Promote awareness of contemporary ethical, social, political, and commercial considerations associated with the exhibition of screen content across an array of platforms.

Level 4

Tell a Story 

In this module, you will define your creative purpose through the development of a short form piece of work that identifies and connects with the target audience. Learn the basics of content, media, and film production to create a coherent narrative using a range of production techniques and technical skills. Experiment with your learning to create a coherent production, finding an audience to tell a story that meets the brief set by Twitter.

Change Hearts 

Use the power of storytelling to trigger an emotive response or ‘change of heart’ from the audience through social impact filmmaking. You will learn to create documentary and factual content, to work with subjects, people, clients, and to observe, capture, and edit material to support its’ emotional power. Incorporate your learning into the creating of content which shows a demonstrable change in opinion.

Level 5

Entertain Me 

You will develop an understanding of the core concepts of fiction storytelling, and appreciate the audience’s relationship with film and television through the production of a short film, TV pilot, or feature film trailer. Learn about audience and market dynamics of the industry, and how to work within the world of fiction by creating an excerpt or pilot for a feature film, television pilot episode, or short film.

Change Minds 

In this module, you will be tasked to inspire an audience to make a choice or change their behaviour through a piece of advertising or branded content in response to an industry client brief. Learn how creative agencies and producers engage with clients to create content that will affect opinion, build brands, and change behaviour, as well as learning to write, direct, shoot, and edit for relevant formats.

Level 6

Becoming Influential 

Employ engaging storytelling techniques, and use evolving new media technologies to create an online brand that garners a loyal following. Learn the business dynamics involved in building a real presence in the digital space, engaging with both new and emergent innovations in audience engagement, and developing your skills in creating content with the capacity to build a loyal audience.

Be an Entrepreneur 

In this module, you will incorporate your previous learning into a self-defined graduation project that develops your skills and showcases your talent in one of six specified areas. Develop your knowledge, skills, and understanding in your chosen area, research and discover new techniques or technological methods to create film or content, and learn entrepreneurship and business skills to raise funding.

Teaching, Learning & Assessment

We include a diverse range of teaching methods which include:

  • seminars in smaller groups;
  • small group tutorials;
  • practical group work;
  • formative feedback through critiques/screening and reflective sessions;
  • skills Labs – a reflection of ‘real world’ experiences; and
  • enhancement activities.
