Introducing Data for Societal Good panelist Casey Castillo! 🙌 Casey was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank in 2022, after serving more than 14 years in leadership roles for the hunger-relief nonprofit. He has implemented new major fundraising initiatives and overseen multi-million dollar infrastructure improvements, all to increase the food bank’s ability to feed the now more than 400,000+ people who need its services each month. Casey holds a B.S. from Brigham Young University, an MBA from California State University, San Bernardino, and is an alumnus of LEAD San Diego’s Impact Program. He currently serves on the Sharp Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees, the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and the California Association of Food Bank’s Board of Directors, Finance Committee, and Farm to Family Committee. As previously mentioned, we've partnered with Community Boost for 2024 to enhance our marketing and outreach efforts. One of the most exciting things included in their Accelerator Program is a concept called the Non-Profit Value Equation. Simply put, the Non-Profit Value Equation helps us articulate the impact we want to achieve by considering: --The "big goal": What positive change do we aim to create? --Likelihood of success: How confident are we in achieving our goal? --Challenges and pain points: What obstacles stand in our way? This may sound analytical, but it's actually a refreshing way to think about our work, especially for arts nonprofits. Sometimes, we may fall prey to comparing ourselves to causes like animal welfare or hunger relief, but the Non-Profit Value Equation allows us to confidently showcase the unique value we contribute. While I won't divulge all of CB's secrets, framing our work through this lens will significantly impact our marketing, grant writing, and connection with audiences. Philanthropy has a huge opportunity—and responsibility—to build a culture of repair both inside and outside their organizations. What would it look like for #philanthropy to advance the work of #reparations? In our Stanford Social Innovation Review article "A Reparations Roadmap for Philanthropy" (📄 https://lnkd.in/gQR4QvFm) with Liberation Ventures, we share the core components of 🔁repair: - reckoning - acknowledgement - accountability - redress But what does it look like and where should funders start? We're excited to share a new report from National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy, "Cracks in the Foundation: Philanthropy’s Role in Reparations for Black People in the DMV," which delves into repairing, healing, and restoring communities affected by charitable wealth origins. It provides a framework for #foundations to not only understand their past, but how they may start acknowledging and addressing these harms with community residents. This report, initially focusing on the DMV, offers a model for cities and regions everywhere. One of the initiatives that I worked on this year was the relaunch of Tyson Foods' Community Giving Program. The programs redesign looks to scale projects, programs and initiatives within our #TeamTyson communities to generate positive community outcomes and realign relationships between the plant facility and the local organization. Additional changes to the program include the following— -The creation of a quarterly giving cycle -Updates to our grant application -Implementation of a community giving steering committee -Focus on DEI by prioritizing programs that demonstrate geographic and programmatic diversity, and who operate in underserved, marginalized, or rural areas -Development of a Power BI Dashboard to better track our investments, and inform our future decision making -Our intentionality to include, listen to, and amplify, the voices of our team members by taking recommendations from plant management for grant applications that are submitted in their community Learn more about our philanthropic strategy here: https://lnkd.in/gkm5Uyui

"Because trust-based philanthropy calls on organizations to align their values to culture and structures as much as it does to their grantmaking practices, taking a trust-based approach often requires foundation boards to also reorient their purpose and areas of focus. As a guide for boards on this reframe, this resource outlines the four, non-mutually exclusive focal points—learning, strategy, grantmaking, and imagination—in which foundation boards can direct their time and attention when stewarding trust-based organizations."

Curt Ellis tells it like it is. So often in the #nonprofit world, leaders are incentivized to center the needs/desires of funders and corporate partners over those of the core constituents. I commend Curt for calling this out and leading FoodCorps in a way that prioritizes the needs of its program participants. Listened in on the latest report of Center for Effective Philanthropy report on the impact of MacKenzie Scott's gifts on the sector. This continues to be really interesting to see the powerful effect her gifts continue to have. It was equally intriguing to see some persistent concerns (from a few funders) that nonprofits can't handle large gifts like this, but I'm encouraged that the nonprofits who got those big gifts are doing great and handling them well. Really appreciated Melanie Willingham-Jaggers and Lakisha Young sharing their perspective on how they hold themselves highly accountable to the people they serve and that this is not diminished by the perceived lack of accountability with Scott's gifts. They are both incredible leaders who are taking their organizations to some incredible new places, driven by the needs of their beneficiaries and the catalytic opportunity these gifts represent. Thanks also to John Palfrey for adding the voice of funders into this great conversation. Thank you Phil Buchanan and Elisha Smith Arrillaga, Ph.D. for this research. Can't wait to see what the sector can learn as the impact of these gifts over time. One interesting idea was raised in the Q&A regarding whether this research could highlight the impact on specific geographic regions (different cities, or rural/urban) or specific types of organizations (human services, capacity builders, justice, etc.) I believe that would be really interesting to see. #philanthropy #grantmaking #research #mackenziescott #catalyticphilanthropy #nonprofitleadership
