Global stocktake of COVID-19 vaccine delivery

2 – 3 May 2023
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Since January 2022, urgent operational, technical, and financial support has been provided to 34 countries that were at or below 10% primary series coverage. With the availability of vaccines, a decrease in the equity gap, and improved coverage across these countries, the dominant strategy is now the integration of COVID-19 vaccination into primary health care with accelerated efforts to reach high-priority groups. Given this evolution, and as the temporary Covid-19 Vaccine Delivery Partnership (CoVDP) transitions back to the partner agencies by June 2023, there is now a need to take stock of COVID-19 delivery support in priority countries and determine future support needs.

A global stocktake is being convened to reflect on achievements of COVID-19 delivery in concerted support countries, identify lessons learned and good practices, develop critical actionable recommendations for integration into primary health care and where possible support recovery of essential immunization.

The meeting is scheduled to take place on 2-3 May 2023 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It will be co-hosted by the Ethiopia Federal Ministry of Health and jointly convened with CoVDP, WHO, UNICEF, Gavi and other Stakeholders.

The key objectives of the event are to:

  • Review coverage progress, identify best practices and take stock of lessons learnt in COVID-19 vaccine delivery in the concerted support countries over the 2022-2023 period
  • To share CoVDP transition plans and agree on key actionable recommendations for the transition phase including considerations for support for integration of COVID-19 into RI/PHC.
  • To provide an opportunity for focused discussions on support for the integration of COVID-19 vaccination in PHC.

Meeting outputs will include:

  • Report of the best practices and lessons learnt in COVID-19 vaccine delivery in participating countries.
  • Timebound recommendations for WHO/UNICEF/Gavi and other key Immunization stakeholders to support for integration of COVID-19 into RI/PHC.  support for integration of COVID-19 into RI/PHC.
  • Broad consensus on the pathway for integration for COVID-19 integrated activities in PHC and essential immunization for support to countries.
